Our Tip of the Week: Sometimes words escape us when we are trying to express ourselves during our grieving process after a loss. That is why creating art — whether by yourself or with the help of an art therapist — could be the perfect medium to get those difficult and confusing feelings out into open without having to struggle to assign words to what you’re feeling inside. While words don’t come easy when we are in the throes of grief, art allows those complicated feelings to flow freely.

How-to Suggestion: We spoke with art therapist Melissa J. Hedlund in 2014, who told us that “seeing your struggles in a visual, concrete form helps you truly heal and grow.” So grab some paper and paints, clay and a kiln or whatever art materials you wish and allow your creative juices to flow. You will be surprised at how you will able to get those complicated feelings and thoughts from your grieving process out there into something visual without the need for any utterance of words that might not be there at the moment.
