In 2004, the Corrs, a Celtic folk rock group consisting of three sisters and one brother, released a beautiful, upbeat song called “Angel.” The song serves as a tribute to the group’s mother, who had died five years earlier. All four siblings wrote the song as a way to honor all of the angelic qualities they so dearly loved about their mother. The song also serves as an uplifting reminder that the acceptance of losing loved ones is the crucial, concluding step in completing the stages of grief.
Backed by a lively melody and an array of instruments, such as flute, violin, drums and guitar, the song describes the angelic qualities that the siblings’ mother exuded in her daily life; i.e. “she lived like she knew nothing lasts” and “didn’t care to look like anyone else.” The Corrs sing of their beloved mother as a metaphorical “Angel” by reflecting on their hopes that those in the afterlife will “love you like we do” and questioning her on what happens when “you’re looking down.”
This song is a lovely tribute to be played at memorials for mothers by their children as the lyrics serve as a promise made in praise; the children will strive to exemplify the angelic qualities taught to them by their mother to become a legacy for the future.
She lived like she knew nothing lasts
Didn’t care to look like anyone else
And she was beautiful, so beautiful
I still hear her laugh like she’s here
Shower it down on all the young
It isn’t so wrong to have such fun…
Forever angel, I hope they love you like we do
Forever angel, I’ll be proud to be like you
Be like you (I’ll be proud to be like you)
Does the sun shine up at you when you’re looking down?
Do you get along with the others around?
It’s got to be better than before
You don’t need to worry now you’re gone…
