Singer Amy Winehouse was found dead today in her London flat. She was 27 years old. The cause of death is yet “unexplained”, according to authorities, but sources suspect it was due to drug overdose.
Winehouse is most well-known for her hit single “Rehab”, from the album Back to Black, which won five Grammy awards in 2006.
It was widely-known that the soul singer struggled with drug and alcohol addictions. At the urging of her father, Mitch, she spent a week at an addiction treatment center in London before going out for her European comeback tour. She pulled out of the tour after the first performance in Serbia on June 18, where she appeared to be too drunk to sing. She was booed at the performance, and many fans left early in the show.
The singer lived a troubled life, suffering for years from substance abuse and mental health issues. She married Blake Fielder-Civil in 2007, and their marriage was plagued by public allegations of Winehouse’s tendency toward violence when she was drunk. In 2009, the couple filed for divorce, “on the grounds of Amy’s adultery”.
Winehouse’s father is currently on a flight to New York for a jazz festival. Reporters are unsure whether he has yet learned the news of his daughter’s death, despite its sweeping international news.
Winehouse’s debut album, Frank, was critically-acclaimed in the UK before she took the US by storm with her record-breaking success with Back to Black. She is often credited with revitalizing the British music scene and influencing the rise in popularity of female soul musicians. Her sultry voice and soulful lyrics will be fondly remembered by fans worldwide.
