When Barry Cox first envisioned a church of trees in the backyard of his Ohaupo, New Zealand home, he didn’t expect that it would resonate so powerfully with others.

Cox’s initial vision, simply dubbed the “Tree Church,” has since grown to include a natural labyrinth and surrounding gardens that invite mindfulness and meditation on the simple, profound beauty of life’s cycles.

Now open to the public, the Tree Church has become a popular venue for weddings and funerals. While its interior maintains traditional aspects of Christian architecture, its materials are without denomination and reflect the delicate relationship that can be cultivated between human discernment and our wild, expansive, awe-inspiring world.
