“Together Again” by Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson needs no introduction. Nor (depending on when you last listened to pop radio) does her chart-topping 1998 hit “Together Again.” The song — and indeed, the concept, through Janet’s eyes — is back in the limelight as her current tour, extended through October 2024, is called the Together Again Tour, embracing the lasting legacy of the uniquely upbeat memorial bop.

Written as an homage to friends who had passed away from AIDS, the tune still resonates, holding post as one of the few songs that inspires heartfelt remembrance as much as celebratory dancing — the latter inspired by the freedom from suffering that death can afford, as well as the joy of eternal connection between bosom buddies.

Rather than focusing on the lack of presence of a loved one who has died, Jackson draws on the lasting influence one’s support during life begets, as well as the comfort a deceased person can offer from beyond.

The song opens with a rather heavenly harp riff and a slowly delivered, heartfelt sentiment —

“There are times when I look above and beyond

There are times when I feel your love around me, baby

I’ll never forget my baby

I’ll never forget you.”

— before diving headfirst into a bumping dance beat. The contrasts continue. Jackson goes on to share her sentiment in a straightforward manner that foregoes preciousness. I so appreciate her focus on the joy that can exist even after death. So often we hear expressions of, “Sorry for your loss,” without any recognition of the eternal gains that a connection with dear ones affords, regardless of whether they are physically present with us — and indeed, the even deeper connection dying can offer. Also, people tend to neglect the relief death can bring to one who is in discomfort, which Jackson unabashedly celebrates.

In a joyful manner, she continues:

“Always been a true angel to me, now above

I can’t wait for you to wrap your wings around me, baby

Oh, wrap them around me, baby.

Sometimes hear you whisperin’ “No more pain”

No worries will you ever see now, baby

I’m so happy for my baby.”

Though listeners (and I) may be contemplating what it means to be “Together Again,” and dancing to this song through tears, I’d rather include the dancing than not.
