Leonard Cohen, “You Want It Darker.”

Leonard Cohen was a Canadian singer-songwriter known for his songs of depth, passion  and poeticism. Throughout his long career, his simple yet layered lyricism has explored themes of religion, sexuality, politics and loss. In his later years, his lyrics delved more into mortality, which is clearly demonstrated in his 14th and final studio album “You Want It Darker” released in 2016, 19 days before his death at age 82.

The title song from the album examines Cohen’s own approaching mortality, and with it, his ambivalent relationship toward God (in this song, referred to as “the dealer”). The song begins with a confrontation — one that shows a man struggling to consolidate the idea of a loving God who would also allow immense suffering in the world. Continue reading

Sara Williams Fights for Affordable Funeral Options

President of Funeral Consumers Alliance balances weighty end-of-life issues with humor and candor

Spend a little time with Sara Williams and you’ll detect an upbeat, even playful spirit, which at first might make her deep, lifelong interest in death a bit of a head-scratcher. She’s president of the nonprofit Funeral Consumers Alliance (FCA), a trained home funeral guide and hospice volunteer — and runs a Death Cafe near where she lives in North Carolina. She knows a lot about death and funerals and is all about helping people learn and act on what she knows.

FCA, which Williams describes as “pro-consumer,” helps people make decisions and save money, as well as detailing veterans’ funeral and burial benefits and more.

Probably nothing reveals her personality better than the statement she made on her Shrouding Sisters website: “I am also a duly ordained minister of American Marriage Ministries. This is why I LOVE to tell people ‘I can marry you AND bury you!’’”

SevenPonds interviewed her recently in advance of the 2025 FCA Biennial Conference June 26-29 in North Carolina, to find out about how FCA is working to help people avoid unnecessary expense and aggravation when planning a funeral.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Dying Inmates’ End-of-Life Choices Are Routinely Ignored

With our prison population aging rapidly, there are more and more terminally ill inmates not receiving the care that they're entitled to

A black-and-white photograph of an inmates' hands clasped through the bars of their cell.KFF Health News, a nonprofit organization that reports on health policy in the United States, recently published an investigative piece revealing how end-of-life choices made by inmates are routinely ignored or overridden. Coupled with the fact that our country’s prison population has been aging rapidly over the last few decades – with thousands dying behind bars each year — this situation is, as one geriatrician says, “shocking.”

While some prisoners’ rights are necessarily restricted or rescinded during the duration of their incarceration, there are some fundamental rights, like protections against cruel and unusual punishment and access to medical care, that are supposed to remain intact. But as KFF and other groups report, many of these provisions are being disregarded when it comes to carrying out end-of-life decisions.

“Dying for Sex,” Starring Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate

The FX miniseries - inspired by a true story - is raw, real and more than a little raunchy

Actress Michelle Williams (young, blond with short hair) is lying on a bed with one arm over her head, wearing a mostly unbuttoned white blouse. She is looking up at the camera, and we see there is a hospital bracelet on the arm above her head.“Dying for Sex,” a comedy/drama miniseries loosely based on the true story of Molly Kochan, is about a woman who leaves her husband in order to explore her sexual desires after being diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Images from the study show light emissions fading after death.

New research using ultrasensitive cameras published in The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters has revealed that a certain type of  light emitted by living organisms fades during the death process.

All living things emit a (very) soft glow, known as biological ultraweak photon emission (UPE). A byproduct of metabolism, this faint illumination had already been identified in 2009. This new study by Canadian scientists is the first to compare the intensity of emissions among healthy, stressed and dead specimens. Continue reading
