Our Weekly Tip: Carry Big Memories in a Tiny Stone

Carry your loved one with you in your pocket

Our Tip of the Week: When we experience a feeling of loss, it can be like part of ourselves has gone missing. When someone who has had a big impact on your life dies, it can seem as if his or her influence upon you has also disappeared. This need not be so. While it is healthy to take time mourning things that are gone forever, such as a tender touch or a supportive word, these memories remain with you and are always available

To help you call upon these memories whenever you’d like, carry a small stone or crystal in your pocket as a mental catalyst and emotional support.

How-to Suggestion: Find a beautiful pebble that you are immediately drawn to — something small that you can carry in a pocket or medicine bag. Take your time finding the perfect one, and while searching, remember that what you seek is already within you. Once you have your pebble, begin carrying it with you immediately. Spend intentional time with it. Find quiet moments, whether at home, on a break at work, waiting in traffic or in nature, to hold your pebble and be filled with nourishing memories of your loved one. Crying or even laughing is a good way to place the emotion of your memory into your pebble. Imagine that inside your pebble is infinite space — it can hold everything you put into it. You may choose to carry this pebble with you for a long time, or maybe it will soon find a safe place in your home along with your cherished belongings.

If you lose your pebble, you might be sad, or you may not. Allow yourself to be surprised. Remember that you gave your pebble everything it carried for you, just as your loved one gave you all of the memories that you carry within you. You may choose to work with another pebble, or not. Be open to evolving, with the certainty that your memories don’t have to be left behind as you grow, releasing whatever ideas don’t serve you, and keeping close those that do.
