Our Tip of the Week: If you’ve lost someone you admired or cared about, chances are that person had similar feelings towards you. While their death may signify a disheartening time for you, it’s likely that they would still want you to be happy and to remember the good times you shared. Sharing memories brings loved ones closer together too.

If you’re planning a memorial service for a loved one, there are many creative ways that you can celebrate their life. For instance, try this idea that incorporates photos of your loved one and balloons.

How-To Suggestions:  Incorporating balloons at a memorial service for your loved one is a unique way to honor their life. The balloons may even help to lighten the mood while adding color to the space. Don’t feel the need to get dark-colored balloons. Try using your loved one’s favorite colors, or a color they loved to wear.

Use colorful string to suspend photos of your loved one to the bottom of the balloons. Helium-filled balloons would work best in this case. To add an interactive aspect, ask your friends and loved ones to choose a picture and share a memory with the other guests during the ceremony. After the service, you can share the photos with your guests in an online photo album if you wish.

You may also ask each participant to write something they admired about the person you are honoring on a balloon with a Sharpie marker. Or ask everyone to come with a letter that they can attach to the end of the string. Then, at the end of the service, you can all go outside and release the balloons with the letters attached into the air as a kind of letting-go ceremony. Add your favorite music to complete the mood.
