Yup today is June 9th, my birthday, and it’s the first birthday I have ever taken seriously. Am I officially old? Am I taking age too seriously? Perhaps, but what it does come down to is three important thoughts:
#1 How am I celebrating? What better way than with a glass of champagne! Believe it or not, even though I live in San Francisco, I have never done the Napa Valley wine tasting tour. So since it’s a hop, skip and a jump away — well I’m there. As you read this, I’m checking out some of the most beautiful wineries and views in the world. If you hear corks popping, yup it’s me along with friends celebrating!
#2 How am I reflecting on life? A glass of champagne is one thing, but let’s face it — looking back on life with some bubbly in hand is a rich experience. So as I take a good look back and reflect, I’ll divulge a slew of my favorite sayings I’ve gathered in my long life thus far:
“If you have had one good friend, you’ve lived a rich life.”
Via my grandfather, Otto Gilomen, who lived at Seven Ponds Lakes in Michigan. Summers with him were the inspiration for this website.
“You can’t lose what you don’t have.”
My dad on nudging me to pick up that phone, try for that new job or build that dream company. Go for it! Which BTW is SevenPonds ; – )
“Half of life is just showing up.”
Much like my dad’s saying, I also love this Woody Allen quote. If you don’t try, forget it.
“You can only eat one pork chop at a time.”
The words of a man who my brother was trying to talk into selling his land because the value had significantly risen. As you may have guessed, my brother is in real estate.
“No matter who we are or how much money we have. We all just get one day at a time.”
My mom on how life is the great equalizer.
“Women go to bed for love looking for sex. Men go to bed for sex looking for love.”
Someone told this to me years ago. OK what’s life without love and sex? So I had to include this favorite one.
#3 How will it change my life going forward? Well, I’ll refer to my number one favorite saying:
“In your 20s, you think you know everything.
In your 30s, you realize you don’t know everything.
In your 40s, you realize you’ll never know everything.
In your 50s, you realize you don’t give a shit.”
Well actually you do give a shit. It’s just about different things.
On that note, cheers to my readers and the world today!
