Our Weekly Tip: Whether you’re writing one or listening to one, eulogies are never easy. While it is definitely important to recall memories of our loved ones after they have died, eulogies have a bad reputation as being long, upsetting and uncomfortable. But do they need to be this way? Why can’t we commemorate our loved ones with laughter instead of tears? If you or your family want to give your loved one a truly unique eulogy, try this tip.

How-To Suggestion:  To create a unique eulogy, get everyone involved. When people first arrive at the service, have them choose from a variety of mementos that you’ve assembled in advance. Offer a selection of flowers, quotes, paper hearts or any other articles that symbolize the person being remembered. You may want to incorporate different colors of each. For example, have a variety of different colored flowers on hand, such as roses, lilies or tulips.

Have your guests hold onto their item throughout the service. When the time comes, ask everyone who is holding a certain item to stand up and speak. For instance, all those who chose a pink rose would stand. Each person can then talk about the person who has died, maybe by recalling a certain memory or making a short speech.

After each guest has spoken, you may want them to keep their meaningful memento. Or collect all the items in a basket or decorative container for the tables, if there is a meal. If possible, find a way to use the items or flowers in the loved one’s memorial. For example, you could toss flowers with the ashes, or collect quotes in a scrapbook for family members to keep.

These unique ideas allow everyone present to take part in a eulogy that is creative, memorable and touching.
