Commemorating the the memory of someone with a home altar is healing, whether it’s reflecting on the places and moments we’ve been with them in our lives or the gifts they have given us. New York-based designer Pete KL recognizes this principle, and puts his own spin on it with his “Modular Memoro blocks,” which are meant to showcase the mementos that hold the most significance for us. Therefore, these Memoro pieces could be used to create a personalized home altar for a loved one who has passed away. Of his Artist Series, which incorporates the work of fellow designers, KL stated, “Ones [sic] personal memories are often intertwined with many other collective memories. Our experiences and interactions with other people really shape who we are, influence our memories and help shape our futures. I wanted to highlight this idea by introducing an artist series into the collection of Memoro Blocks.”
The Modular Memoro blocks collection, Pete KL’s personal home altar design, was exhibited at the Pratt Institute booth of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) this past May. According to Design Territory, “The students were challenged in a collaboration between Pratt and Herman Miller to create objects that promote physical and mental well-being.” Below are photos of the blocks from Pete KL’s website:
