Our Tip of the Week: Sometimes, when you’re grieving the loss of a loved one, you just want a space to sit and think. Memorial wind chimes can help the grief you feel in this moment. Not only are wind chimes beautiful garden decorations, they create tranquil sounds that can calm a worried mind. When you create or buy a wind chime with your loved one in mind, you are reminded of them whenever you look at it or hear its gentle tune from your window. Chimes create a physical and sonic space for meditation. They also encourage grieving loved ones to step outside of the house and take in some fresh air.

How-to Suggestion: Create a basic wind chime yourself, or purchase a personalized version from a memorial gift store. Stores sell pre-made wind chimes that have your loved one’s name or favorite saying written on its parts. To make your own version, simply tie a few chimes together with string, and have a flat piece of metal engraved with your loved one’s initials hanging from the center of the chimes. You can use found objects such as glass, shells or ceramic or buy metal parts at a craft store. Keep in mind that the sun will reflect off shiny surfaces like metal or catch light through colored glass. When the wind blows, the chimes rustle against one another, creating a whistle-like sound. Pick long chimes for a lower, more robust sound. Create your memorial chime out of smaller pieces for a light, bell-like sound.
