Our Tip of the Month: Add a Mid-Century Flower Bar for an Autumn Memorial Reception Table
Autumn often symbolizes change and reflection, providing a poignant backdrop for end-of-life ceremonies that occur during this season. In a memorial reception during autumn, dried flowers can play a festive but elegant role as a mid-century style table centerpiece in the form of a “flower bar.”
A flower bar allows you to create a beautiful and heartfelt arrangement of dried, seasonal flowers in a single row, set in a wooden block. These make excellent table decor for an autumn gathering during your memorial reception table or repast.
Flowers are a timeless motif in many funerals, memorials, and grief ceremonies across many cultures, representing growth, honor, and remembrance among other meanings.

How-To Suggestions: Creating a Fall-Inspired Flower Bar
You can purchase many flower bars that come with autumn-style dried flowers in your choice of wood finish, allowing you to customize the table piece according to your loved one’s memorial service.
You can also create your own flower bar with a few easy steps. You’ll need:
- Wood block cut to the size you need (15mm is a suitable default size)
- Pencil
- Drill
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Sanding materials
- Your choice of fall-inspired dried flowers
Take your wood block and sand it for a smooth finish.
Mark with a pencil where you’ll make the holes for the flowers. Use your measuring tape to ensure they are centered and evenly spaced apart. Include enough holes for all of the flowers you wish to display.
Take the drill and create a hole where you marked, deep enough to display the flowers. Don’t drill all the way through; you can mark just before the entire depth of your wood on your drill with tape so you know where to stop. A 2mm drill bit is generally sufficient for most flower stems, but it’s recommended to measure your stems to ensure the drill bit is the suitable size for your flowers.
Cut your flower stems to the length you wish to display them. Varying the lengths can allow them to stand at different heights, adding visual flair to your memorial reception table.
