The End-of-Life with High Design

Cutting-edge Scandinavian design makes these urns and coffins a dignified way to say farewell

In 2009, the Danish funeral directing firm Tommerup Kister teamed up with world-renowned design company Jacob Jensen Design with the idea of bringing cutting-edge Scandinavian design into the end-of-life experience. For the company’s centennial in 2010, the team launched a unique line of universal, timeless coffins and urns called the Diamant Series.

The design of the series is inspired by the shape of a diamond to symbolize preciousness and perpetuity. Light plays in the classic facets of the diamond, with sharp lines and an elegant, sculptural look. The highest point of the coffin is in line with the occupant’s heart, with a surface designed to accommodate a single flower.

The power of the simple design allows the coffins and urns to go otherwise unadorned, part of the eco-friendly intent of the designers. The coffins are constructed of simple plywood and lined with cotton so as to be highly biodegradable and require few resources. This modern twist on an age-old tradition strikes just the right balance sought by the designers: “to be different, but not strange.”

Tommerup Kister will exhibit at Funeraire Paris from November 17-19. See the website for additional information.

Kevin’s stance on all this has veergd on disgraceful that’s if I could work out what his stance actually is.I think Rudd’s handing of the affair has become more of an issue than anything else if he’d left the issue alone, it would have blown over quite quickly. A statement to the effect that the terrorists want to be martyrs, the Labor party is opposed to fulfilling this wish’ would have been much better than the panic stations. As it is, the mediafication of the event will cause a lot of talk, but it will have blown over well before the election. What sort of subconcious stain remains attached to Rudd in the public mind afterwards really depends on his profile between now and then, I think. More events such as these will obviously have a cumulative effect of destabilising faith in him, if he keeps his head down, it should be forgotten rather quickly I’d imagine.
